Pain Killer Addiction: Going Beyond Pain Relief

Update (November 2025): Prescription painkiller misuse continues to be a major concern in Canada. This article has been updated with the latest insights on painkiller addiction, including common opioids, warning signs, and effective treatment options to support lasting recovery.

After surgery or injury, pain relief is often the main concern, and doctors commonly prescribe painkillers to help manage recovery. While these medications alleviate pain, they can also create a sense of euphoria by boosting natural endorphins — a feeling that can lead to painkiller addiction.

Canadian Painkiller Use

As of 2022 data, the annual rate of prevalent prescription opioid use for pain in Canada was approximately 9% to 9.6% of the population, which represents around 2.7 to 3.7 million Canadians aged 15 and older. Among users, 15.4% engaged in problematic use, including taking more than prescribed, using the medication to get high, or tampering with opioid products.

Toronto Trends

In Toronto, suspected opioid overdose calls to paramedics have doubled since the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the growing risks associated with painkiller misuse.

Common Addictive Painkillers

  • Fentanyl: Stronger than morphine, used medically or obtained illegally, often mixed with heroin or counterfeit drugs.

  • OxyContin: Extended-release oxycodone tablets for moderate to severe pain.

  • Morphine: Natural opiate for severe pain.

  • Percocet: Combines acetaminophen and oxycodone.

  • Codeine: Short-acting natural opiate found in Tylenol #3.

Treatment Options

Methadone helps manage withdrawal symptoms and reduces cravings during detox but is a Schedule II medication due to its abuse potential. Suboxone, containing buprenorphine and naloxone, blocks opioid receptors and prevents withdrawal while reducing urges.
